The Story Behind The Song
It really did begin at my kitchen table.
This song started at my kitchen table, looking at a photo of my dad — one where he looked so alive I felt I could reach out and embrace him.
It was more than a year after he'd passed, but in memory he was still close.
In the early months I'd catch myself thinking I'd only spoken to him a few weeks back. Slowly, it sank in that he wouldn't be on the other end of the phone again.
But I can still hear his advice coming down the line — steady, supportive, the same as always.
“I hear advice coming down the line.He said, Son, stand your ground,I stand with you — that will always be.”
To me, that's what a father gives a child: the sense that someone is permanently in their corner.
A mother's love is every bit as central — I explored that in my song “All Hail Mothers, Mary” — but this one is about me and my dad.
The title is deliberate.
Not “best dad ever” — because no dad is perfect, and not every child's best dad is their biological one. It might be a stepfather, a foster father, or a mentor.
That's why the song also acknowledges that dads can make mistakes.
We all do.
What matters is that we keep showing up, and keep loving our kids.
